Mrs. Wilma Lea Erby, affectionately known as ‘Bill’, age 94, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on October 14, 2009. Mrs. Erby was born September 21, 1915 in Richmond Co., a daughter of the late Walter M. and Sophronia Boyette Smith. Mrs. Erby was the oldest living member of Community Church. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who will be missed by all. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Benjamin H. Erby; brothers, Raymond, David, and Monroe Smith; sisters, Minnie Gore, Irene Goodwin, Hallie Smith, and Phoebe Kitchens, as well as a grandson, Lannis Craig Smith. She is survived by her son, Kenneth W. Erby, daughter and son-in-law, Sue and James Smith, all of Rockingham; grandchildren, Jimmy Smith and wife Sheryl of Raleigh and Kenneth Smith and wife Kate of Rockingham; great grandchildren, Casey, Hunter, and Kenley Smith, Sgt. Christopher Smith, who is serving his country in Iraq, and his wife Alexandria, all of Rockingham, Candace Williams of Greenville and Christopher Williams of Raleigh; great great grandchildren, Chloe Smith of Rockingham and Carter Williams of Greenville, along with a number of nieces and nephews. A service to celebrate Mrs. Erby’s life will be conducted 2:00 pm Saturday, October 17, 2009 at Community Church with Rev. Robby Stewart and Rev. Lois Childers officiating. Interment will follow in Richmond Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 7 to 9 pm at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham and other times at the home of Sue and James Smith, 907 Morningside Dr., Rockingham.
