Thomas Larty Powell, 83, of Rockingham, died Thursday, November 12, 2009 in Rockingham. Mr. Powell was born October 27, 1926 in Polk County, Fl, a son of the late Thomas Allen and Alma Parrish Powell. He had served his country in the US Army during World War II, was a former governor of the Moose Lodge, a member of the American Legion , VFW and had retired from CSX Railroad. His wife, Margie Henderson Powell preceded him in death. Surviving are his son, Wayne Powell and wife Bettina of Rockingham; daughters, Diana Hawks and husband Tim of Ellerbe, Stacey Sims and Fiance, Mike Kelly of Windblow Community, Terry Powell of Asheville;grandchildren, Greg Hall and wife Bridget, Jessica Hawks, Grae Hawks, Jennifer Powell, Tray Powell, Jamie Powell and wife Jan. Jessica Powell, Diane Sims, Tammy Lyford and husband Jonathan, Josh Sims and 9 great grandchildren. Graveside services with Military Honors will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday at Richmond County Memorial Park with Rev. Tim Hawks officiating. The family will see friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Friday at Carter Funeral Home and at other times at Wayne and Bettina’s home, 1707 Sandhill Game Management Road, Rockingham,NC.
