Bernice Steen Porter

Bernice Lee Steen Porter, 83, ,of 106 Safie 3rd St. Rockingham, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, November 24, 2009. Mrs. Porter was born July 4, 1926 in Marlboro County, SC, a daughter of the late William and Annie Melton Steen. She was a member of East Rockingham Congregational Holiness Church and a homemaker. Her first husband and father of her children, Jesse Butler, her second husband, Arvil D. Porter, a daughter, Betty Geraldine Butler, a great grandson, Brandon Duran Almond, and a brother, William “Buster” Steen , all preceded her in death. Surviving are daughters, Virginia “Dee” White and husband Larry of the home, Janice B. Blanton of Rockingham; sons, Jesse “Bobby” Butler of Hamlet, Perry Butler of Hamlet, Roger Butler of Rockingham; 7 grandchildren;13 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; sisters, Thelma Butler of Hamlet, Frances Davis of Bennettsville, SC; brother, Johnny Steen and wife Patricia of Bennettsville, SC and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday at East Rockingham Congregational Holiness Church with Rev. Mark Bryant and Rev. Jerry Goins officiating. Interment will follow in the Steen Family Cemetery. The family will see friends from 6:00 – 8:00 PM Friday at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham and at other times at the home on Safie 3rd St. The family wishes to extend a very special thank you to Scotland County Hospice, to nurse Jill Ward and to Diane Horton, whom she loved very much, for their caring compassion and care of Mrs. Porter.
