Philip Gene Hogan, 70, a lifelong resident of Norman, passed away Sunday, December 27, 2009 at his home, following a 3-year battle with Pulmonary Fibrosis. Philip was born March 27, 1939 in Richmond County, North Carolina, the middle son of Elsie Vernon and Margaret McLeod Hogan. He was a graduate of Ellerbe High School, Class of 1957 and North Carolina State University. He was a member of Norman United Methodist Church where he had served as treasurer and had been a Sunday School teacher. Philip was a member of the Ellerbe Civitan Club, where he had held various offices as well as the office of Lt. Governor of NC District West of Civitan International. He was a member of Mt. Creek Volunteer Fire Department, currently serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors. Philip had been the co-owner of Laurel Hill Paper Company for many years and owner of Push Creek Farm in Idabel, OK. In 1996, Philip enrolled a large portion of Push Creek Farm into the Wetlands Reserve Program. This began the Red Slough Wetlands Reserve Project. In 2001, he was awarded the National Taking Wing Award from the United States Department of Agriculture, Forestry Service for his involvement in the project. Philip was a loving and devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was kind and generous to his family and friends and never met a stranger. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Larry and Kent Hogan. Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Janet Johnson Hogan of the home; daughters, Marva Hogan Allen and husband Mike of Star, Tonya Hogan of Asheville, and Lorrie Hogan Stewart of Norman; grandchildren, Melissa Allen, Preston Allen, Nick Allen, and Taylor Stewart; and several nieces and nephews. A service to celebrate Philip’s life will be held at 11:00 AM Thursday, December 31, 2009 at Norman United Methodist Church with Rev. Bob Carpenter officiating. Interment will follow in Norman Cemetery. The family will see friends from 5:00 – 8:00 PM Wednesday at Carter Funeral Home in Ellerbe and at other times at the home.
