Catherine Carnes Smith

Mrs. Catherine Carnes Smith, 86, of Rockingham, died Monday, February 1, 2010 at Rockingham Manor. Mrs. Smith was born December 20, 1923 in Lancaster, SC, a daughter of the late Lester and Lillie Mae Twitty Carnes. She was an active member of East Rockingham United Methodist Church, where she had been a member of the choir and had retired from Avondale Mills, formerly Beaunit Mfg., after 40 years of service. Her husband, Robert G. Smith preceded her in death in1998. Surviving are her daughters, Janis Benson of Rockingham, Brenda Pressley and husband Robert of Charlotte; grandchildren, Tim Benson, Jr., Angela Benson Long and husband Bryan, Joel Mullis and wife Wendy, Brandy Pressley and Brad Pressley; great grandchildren, Olive, Josie and Sunny Mullis. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday at East Rockingham United Methodist Church with the Rev. Vann Floyd and Rev. Deana White officiating. Interment will follow in Richmond County Memorial Park. The family will see friends from 12:45 – 1:45 PM Thursday at the church and at other times at the Benson home, 402 Happy Valley Rd., Rockingham.
