Stephanie (Stevie) June Edwards Hicks, 78, of Cornelius NC departed this life in peace at The Oaks in Huntersville on Thursday, August 5, 2010. Stephanie was born April 4, 1932 in Washington, DC to Raymond Frank Edwards and Elsie June Green Edwards, from King George, Virginia. Stephanie is survived by her husband of 51 years, Jim Hicks; three sons, three daughters in law, and three granddaughters, James Franklin Hicks III (wife Bernice and their daughter Jennifer), Erie Colorado, Mark Raymond Hicks (wife Susan and their daughters Lindsey and Logan), Woodland Park Colorado and Peter Sanford Hicks (wife Amy), Atlanta Georgia. She is also survived by sisters- in- law Joyce Edwards (wife of Philip) and Lou Edwards (wife of Jimmie), many nieces, nephews, cousins, and her beloved cats Sunshine, Shadow, and Smokey. She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Philip Arnold Edwards and James Berkeley Edwards, and daughter Agnes, the “Littlest Angel” (twin to James III). Stephanie graduated from St. Cecilia’s Academy for Girls in Washington DC, Averett College in Danville, Virginia and Columbia University in New York City with a BS degree in Nursing. While married she lived in many places: Chapel Hill NC (while Jim was earning his MBA); Poughkeepsie, NY, Wappinger’s Falls NY, Raleigh NC, Gaithersburg MD, Mattapoisett MA, Bedford NY, Paris France, Bedford NY (while Jim was employed with IBM); Rockingham, NC and Cornelius NC (after retirement). Stephanie was primarily a stay at home mom most of her life however she was employed as an RN at University Hospital in Chapel Hill, Northern Westchester Hospital in Mount Kisco, Rex Hospital in Raleigh. While living in Paris she organized and managed a proof reading office for IBM’s legal team. Stephanie was actively involved in many civic and church activities: St. Cecilia’s Academy Alumnae Association, Alumni of Averett College, Alumni of Columbia University, Daughters of the American Revolution; American Association of University Women, Cub Scout leader, Athletic Booster Clubs, PTA, Mattapoisett Congregational Church Women; American Women’s Club of Paris, President of Hospital Volunteers at Rockingham, Children’s Tutoring, Circle #3 Rockingham United Methodist Church, Vice President and day captain at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center in Mooresville, Lake Norman Auxiliary, Prime Timers of Davidson United Methodist Church. Stephanie especially enjoyed her times with her beloved granddaughters One of her favorite activities was to send cards for all occasions to all of her friends, family, Prime Time members, and everybody else. She would write a card to a person who sent her a card and never forgot birthdays, anniversaries, and special occasions. Stephanie was a very loving and giving person. Her way of life and advice to others was “Learn to love one another through sharing, understanding, giving of you to your family, friends and community, and always tell people that you like or love them”. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at the Davidson United Methodist Church at 1:00 PM with visitation in fellowship hall at 12 noon. The service will be conducted by Rev. Jody Seymour and Rev. Berta Spencer. Following the memorial service there will be a celebration of Stephanie’s life at the Peninsula Country Club. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Stephanie Hicks Memorial Fund at the Davidson United Methodist Church, 233 South Main Street, Davidson, NC 28036. A nonprofit organization will administer a fund to provide hospital/nursing home patients with a convenient means of communicating with family and friends. The family deeply appreciates all of the love, prayers, and care given by all. A special thanks to the great team at the Oaks who gave Stephanie such special care. The family requests any offers of food be donated to the church’s activities.
