William Lee (Bill) Williams, 93, of Southern Pines and formally of Rockingham passed away on September 18, 2010, at Manor Care in Moore County. He was born in Montgomery County on August 29, 1917 to Maggie Lee and William Randolph Williams and grew up in Ellerbe. Bill was retired from Progress Energy where he served as a control room operator at the Blewitt Falls hydro electric plant for 37 years. He was married first to the late Carrie Hicks Williams and had two children, Bill and wife Edna of Aberdeen, and Preston and wife Taska of Charlotte. He was married second to the late Margaret Deese Williams. He was active in church work serving on the Administrative Board, Chairman of Trustees and Sunday school teacher at Forrestville, UMC. In later years he was an active member of the First Baptist Church in Rockingham and was extremely fond of his Sunday School Class. Bill spent his retirement years doing volunteer work at various agencies including the Richmond County Schools, the local hospital and delivering Meals on Wheels. An avid sports fan he played tennis until he was in his late 80’s. Bill and Margaret traveled extensively in the US, Canada, Europe, Russia and China. He was preceded in death by his wives, Carrie and Margaret; brothers, Lyman and Randolph; sisters Charlotte, Katherine and Shirley. Bill is survived by his two sons (Bill and Preston), 3 grandsons (Brad, Matthew and William Scott) and 5 great grandchildren; a stepson Jody Deese; stepdaughter Judy Deese Sweatman. A service to celebrate his life will be held Wednesday, September 22 2010 at the First Baptist Church in Rockingham at 11:00am with Dr. Rev. Jim Nelson officiating. Interment will follow at Eastside Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. The family requests that donations in his memory be made to the First Baptist Church of Rockingham 201 N. Randolph St., Rockingham, NC 28379.
