Kenneth Young Rankin, 66, of the Derby Community, Ellerbe, died Thursday, December 2, 2010 on the family farm. He endured a long battle with diabetes. He was born December 27, 1943, the son of the late Dolph Young and Mary Jane Nelson Rankin. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 39 years, Lois Martin Rankin of the home; their children, Nathaniel D. Rankin and wife Aimee of Ellerbe, Meredith Rankin McInnis and husband Richard of Rockingham; grandchildren, Connor Ross and Dare Rankin McInnis; sister, Susan Rankin Eaves and husband Mike of Fuquay Varina; and a multitude of close family, friends and neighbors. Ken was a member of Derby Baptist Church. During his life he held various jobs and wore numerous hats, though he was a farmer at heart. Throughout his life he supported many causes and organizations. He was a strong supporter of the Richmond Raider football program, the Derby Volunteer Fire Department, the Derby Baptist Church, and local politics. He was a friend to everyone who knew him and never met a stranger. He was always willing to lend his ears, his advice, his support, his love or his time to anyone who needed it. He was a devoted husband, a wonderful father and grandfather. He was proud of his family and loved them dearly. Ken Rankin was an asset to his wife and family, his neighbors, his community and a true and special friend to many. He will be missed dearly. We Love You “Bopa”. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm Sunday, December 5, 2010 at Derby Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Jones Springs Cemetery. The family will see friends from 5:00 – 8:00 pm Saturday at Carter Funeral Home in Ellerbe and at other times at the home.
