Janie Louise Smith Dawkins, 94, of Ellerbe, passed away Sunday, December 19, 2010 at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital in Rockingham. Mrs. Dawkins was born April 26, 1916 in Richmond County, a daughter of the late Albert L. and Janie Gibson Smith. She was a long time member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, where she had served as church treasurer for 27 years and a Sunday school teacher for 25 years. She retired in 1986 as assistant Librarian from Leath Memorial Library and had also been employed with Commonwealth Hosiery and Richmond County Schools. She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl H. Dawkins, a daughter and son-in-law, Kay Nance King and Dave S. King, a granddaughter, Deborah Jean Dawkins, a brother, Albert Smith, a sister, Ruth S. Adcock and a brother-in-law, J.B. Dawkins. Surviving are her sons, Herbert Dawkins and wife Annette, Dell Dawkins and Lotta, all of Ellerbe; daughter, Janice Thomas and husband John C. “JT” of Ellerbe; brother, Nelson Smith and wife Frances of Raleigh; sisters, Willie Dawkins of Rockingham, Grace Glover and husband Donald of Asheville, Jean Lamb and husband Elbert of Lumberton; grandchildren Ann D. King and husband Jimmy, Chris Thomas and wife Gidget, William C. “Bill” Dawkins and wife Stephanie, Stephen C. Nance, Frances N. Hodges and husband Daniel, Carl J. Dawkins and wife Crystal, all of Ellerbe John M. “Mac” Nance and wife Laura, Amy T. Baxley and husband Grover C. “Cleve” Baxley, IV, all of Rockingham, , great grandchildren, Keith King, Brent King and wife Kelli, Scarlett Hodges, Neeley Dawkins, Killian Dawkins, Kaitlyn Dawkins, William B. Dawkins, Ava Hodges, Daniel Hodges, Jr, all of Ellerbe, Victoria “Tori” Nance, Rebekah Louise Nance, both of Sumter, SC, Grover C. Baxley, V, Hunter Baxley, Faith Louise Baxley, all of Rockingham, Phillip Wells of Polaka, FL, and great-great grandchildren Damien King, Tyler King, Alexus King, Kailey McInnis and Alyssa Hodges, all of Ellerbe and a host of nieces and nephews, as well as her church family. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Jerry Mims and Rev. Wayne Richardson officiating. Interment will follow in Ellerbe Cemetery. The family will see friends from 6:00 – 8:00 pm Tuesday at Carter Funeral Home in Ellerbe and at other times at Herbert and Annette’s at 1699 US 220 Hwy Ellerbe.
