Carolyn Layton Sanford Chavis

Carolyn Jean Layton Sanford Chavis, 81, of Rockingham passed away Friday, June 17, 2022 at Hospice Haven in Rockingham.

Mrs. Chavis was born May 19, 1941 in Bladen County, a daughter of the late Horace Wesley and Louise Barber Layton. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and worked with L’Eggs and later as a teacher’s assistant with Richmond County Schools. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Jimmy Ray Sanford, sons, Mitchell Ray Sanford and Mark Alan Sanford and brother, John Layton.

Surviving are her husband Kenneth Chavis; daughter, Angela Sanford Watkins (Paul); grandchildren, Alex Watkins, Caleb Watkins, Kevin Sanford (Shelly) and Katelyn Sanford; great grandchildren, Tristan Sanford, Ethan Sanford, Mason McLaughlin and Zander Harris; brothers, Kenneth Layton and James Layton and sisters, Mary Frances Smith and Glenda Rogers.

Graveside services will be at 2:00 pm Saturday, June 18, 2022 at Old Northam Cemetery in Rockingham with Rev. Butch Park officiating. The family will greet friends following the service.
