Charles Duane Kilby, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2025, at the Richmond County Hospice Haven in Rockingham, North Carolina. He was born on June 19, 1930, in Forest Hill, Maryland, the cherished son of Delmas Jennings Kilby and Selma Clyde Edwards Kilby. His extensive and fulfilling life was marked by service, family, and an abiding sense of humor.

A proud veteran, Charles served in the United States Army, embodying the dedication that would characterize his lifelong work. He pursued a career as a mechanic, spending a significant portion of his professional life at Aberdeen Proving Ground while also owning his own garage. A private pilot, his adventurous spirit soared both in the skies and in his daily life.

Charles stood out not only for his skills and commitment to his profession but also for his genuinely funny and kind demeanor. He had a welcoming presence that earned him countless friends and admirers throughout his life.

Family was the cornerstone of Charles's existence. He is survived by his loving wife, Barbara Ann Parrish Kilby, and their daughter, Jane Kilby. He took immense pride in his five grandchildren and delighted in the company of his eight great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, all of whom enriched his life with joy and laughter. In addition, he leaves behind his siblings: Barbara Anders, Iva Jean Boylan, and brother Vonley Kilby, who will forever cherish the memories they created together.

Charles also embraced those he cared for deeply, including his foster children, Jim Walls and Mathew Samuolis, who were integral parts of his extended family.

Throughout his life, Charles was active in his community; he attended Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, where he found solace and connection with fellow parishioners. He enjoyed lively games of cards and playing Bingo at the Ellerbe Senior Center, where his infectious laughter and friendly banter brought smiles to many faces.

He is preceded in death by his beloved wives Janet Lee Douglas Kilby, Jane Skidmore Kilby, and Dora Mae Dowel Kilby, his son, Benjamin Charles Kilby, as well as his brothers, Daniel Delmar Kilby and Harold Dean Kilby, and sister Kathleen Kilby Cox. While these losses left indelible marks on Charles's heart, his legacy of kindness, humor, and devotion continues to inspire all who knew him.

A memorial service will be held at a later date.

As family and friends gather to remember Charles, they will hold dear the warmth of his laughter, the comfort of his presence, and the love he imparted to everyone around him. His spirit lives on through his loved ones and the many lives he touched. Rest in peace Charlie, you will be profoundly missed.
