James “Jim” Upton Altimus, Sr., 84, passed away at his home in Ellerbe Tuesday morning, January 12, 2021, following a period of declining health. A native of Pennsylvania, he was born May 12, 1936, a son of the late Russell J. and Grace Helman Altimus.
He and his wife of 63 years, Marianne “Kay” Altimus, had lived in North Carolina for 28 years since he retired as an accountant with AT&T. He also served in the Army National Guard and was honorably discharged in 1962. He was an avid golfer and when he couldn’t be on the golf course, he thoroughly enjoyed gardening. He was a member of the Ellerbe United Methodist Church.
In addition to his wife, he leaves behind five children: Jacqueline “Jacki” Sherman (Mike) of Maryland, James “Jim” Altimus, Jr. (Lois) of Arkansas, Traci Gomiller of Ellerbe, Bobbi Greenfield (John) of Maryland and Lori Reynolds of Ellerbe; a sister, Jean Kisic of Belsano, PA; and a brother, Richard “Dick” Altimus of Newberg, MD. Ten grandchildren, fourteen great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.
Other than his parents, two sisters, five brothers and one granddaughter also preceded him in death.
The family will receive friends at the home (144 Grey Fox Road, Ellerbe) on Thursday, January 14, from 5:00 until 8:00 PM. A private memorial service for the family will be conducted at a later date.
