Judy Sasser Richardson

Judy Sasser Richardson, 74, of Ellerbe, passed away Wednesday, April 4, 2018 at FirstHealth Hospice House in West End.

Mrs. Richardson was born February 24, 1944 in Anson County, a daughter of the late John & Mary Colon Newton Sasser. She was a graduate of Ellerbe High School, Class of 1962, Wingate College and the University of North Carolina-Charlotte. Following graduation from UNCC, she began her 49 year teaching career with the Richmond County School System. She had been active in Cub Scouting and Boy Scouting for many years as a cub master and was instrumental in engaging others in scouting leadership. She was recipient of the Silver Beaver award for her work with Scouting.  She was very active in Fellowship Baptist Church including serving on various boards and committees and as a Sunday School Teacher.  She had served on the Board of Trustees for the Rankin Museum, served on the Mineral Springs Improvement Council and volunteered at Bethel Church of God in Christ. For over a decade she hosted and supported many exchange students in her home. She loved gardening, college basketball and was a big supporter of Wingate College and UNCC. Her grandchildren were the light of her life. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Curtis Richardson, and a son, David Samuel Richardson.

Surviving are her children, Daniel Richardson (Angela) of Conway, SC, Dereck Shipp of Richmond, VA; grandchildren, Tucker and Sadie Richardson; brothers, James Sasser of Charlotte, Merle Sasser of Ellerbe and Benjamin Sasser of Florence, SC and sister Susan Burley of Florence, SC.

Funeral services will be at 2 pm Sunday at Fellowship Baptist Church with Rev. Bill Monroe officiating. Interment will follow in Ellerbe Cemetery.

The family will see friends from 6-8 pm Saturday at Carter Funeral Home and at other times at the Richardson Homeplace on Jones Springs Church Rd.
