Robert Alexander McCormick, Sr., 80, passed away at his home Friday, August 28, 2020, under Hospice care with his family at his side. Born in Richmond County on May 14, 1940, he was a son of the late John William and Laura Jane Talbert McCormick.
Robert served his country honorably in the United States Army in his younger years. He retired after many years of service as a machinist with Clark Equipment Company when the company closed. He enjoyed everything outdoors including fishing, hunting and gardening to name a few. He attended Concord United Methodist Church.
His memory will be cherished by his two children, Neil McCormick and wife, Amy, and Stacey Sweatt and husband, Tony, all of Rockingham; a step-daughter, Michelle Napier; his grandchildren, Shannon, Bree and Dalton McCormick and Daniel and Adam Sweatt; his long-time companion, Jenelle Thompson; two brothers, Max and Jerry McCormick; one sister, Louise Lucas; plus a number of “bonus” grandchildren who always called him “Papa.”
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Robert A. McCormick, Jr.; one step-daughter, Angie Quick; brothers Bill, Herbert, Marion, Frank, Doran, John and Joe McCormick; and sisters, Lucille Faircloth, Peggy Webb, Agnes Treece Whittington and Anne McCormick Dye.
Due to COVID conditions, the funeral service will be limited to family and close friends and will be conducted at Concord United Methodist at 11:00 AM Monday, August 31, with Pastor David Kelly officiating. Those in attendance are requested to wear facial coverings. Burial will follow in the Ellerbe Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the cemetery following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Concord UMC, C/O Brenda Allred, 224 Allred Rd., Ellerbe, NC 28338 or to Richmond County Hospice, 1119 N. US Hwy. 1, Rockingham, NC 28379.
