Shirley Catherine Hooks Huggins, 81, joined Heaven's choir on Friday, June 8, 2018. She passed away in Lexington, Virginia, after a five-month battle with brain cancer.
She was born in Rockingham, North Carolina, on September 11, 1936, a daughter of the late Reverend John Lee and Grace Virginia Hutchinson Hooks. She married Malcolm Huggins on August 22, 1954. As a military couple, they lived in Spokane, Washington; Tainan, Taiwan; and San Antonio, Texas. While in Texas, she was a hairdresser and then worked in Baptist Memorial Hospital's Business Office. They moved to Rockingham, North Carolina, in 1993, where she worked as an office manager for a local doctor's office.
She was a faithful member of Temple Baptist Church in Rockingham, where she was an alto in the choir and taught children ages 2-4.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Surviving are her daughter Sherry Huggins Harden and husband Clyde, of Lexington, Virginia; granddaughter Meagan Harden McGuire and husband William Michael; great-granddaughter Annabelle Kate McGuire; an expected great-grandson in August, all of Staunton, Virginia; brother Johnny Richard Hooks and sister-in-law Linda Wilson Hooks, both of Rockingham, North Carolina.
The family will receive friends at the visitation on Saturday, June 16, from 9:45 am to 10:45 am at Temple Baptist Church, Rockingham, North Carolina, with an 11:00 am service to follow. Interment will be at 1:30 pm at Evergreen Perpetual Care Cemetery Mausoleum in Dillon, South Carolina. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Temple Baptist Church, 165 Airport Rd., Rockingham, NC 28379 or Rockbridge Area Hospice, 315 Myers St., Lexington, VA 24450.
