Steven Charles Shelton, 56, of Charlotte, NC went to heaven to be with his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, October 4, 2022.
Born in Rockingham, NC, he attended Richmond Senior High School, obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from University of Alaska Fairbanks, and a Master of Science degree from Bellevue University.
Steve served 25 years in the U.S. Army and retired as a First Sergeant in 2008. The first five years of his military career he was a member of the Pershing Missile program while stationed at U.S. Army Garrison Stuttgart in Germany and at Fort Wainwright in Fairbanks, AK. He then spent 20 years as military police while stationed at Fort Bragg in Fayetteville, NC; Fort Hood in Killeen, TX; U.S. Army War College in Carlisle, PA; Camp Humphries in South Korea; and Fort Gordon in Augusta, GA. He was designated imminent danger and deployed to St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands in 1989; Panama from 1989-1990; Gulf War from 1990-1991; and Bosnia from 1996-1997. After retirement from active military, he worked for 10 years for the Department of Defense at the NSA in Augusta, GA.
A member of Church of Christ at Gold Hill Road, the Carolina Senior Softball League, and the VFW Mint Hill, he enjoyed playing softball, woodworking, fishing, handyman projects, and spending time with his family.
Steve’s legacy will continue in the lives of others due to his loving gift of organ donation through Donate Life.
He is proceeded in death by his father Charles Shelton and his wife Traci Shelton.
He is survived by his mother Elaine Shelton of Rockingham, NC; wife Karen Shelton of the home; son Cliff Shelton of Denver, CO; daughters Heather Brookes (Miles) of Wasilla, AK and Emily Shelton of the home; stepson Bryson Byrnes of the home; grandchildren Egan and Elsie Brookes of Wasilla, AK; brothers Tommy (Teresa) Shelton of Rockingham, NC and Lee (Michelle) Shelton of Southport, NC; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be on Friday, October 7, 6:00-8:00 p.m. and the funeral on Saturday, October 8, 11:00 a.m., both at Zion United Methodist Church in Rockingham, NC.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Southeastern Children’s Home in Duncan, SC or Donate Life North Carolina.
