Sylvia Jean Grooms

Sylvia Jean Goodwin Grooms 82, of Rockingham passed away Saturday, October 21, 2017 at Hospice Haven. She was born January 1, 1935 in Richmond County a daughter of the late James H. and Lillie M. Norton Goodwin. She was a member of Midway Baptist Church since 1955, lead the choir since 1965 and was retired from Clark Equipment Company and the Christian Bookstore. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles G. Grooms, Sr. and her siblings R.B. Goodwin, Lucille McKeel, Cecil Goodwin, David Goodwin, Faye Goodwin and James Douglas Goodwin. Surviving are her children, Sandra Diggs of Rocky Point, Charles G. Grooms, Jr.(Phyllis) of Hamlet,  Joe Grooms(Leah) of Rockingham; grandchildren, Brandon Diggs(Amanda), Blair Watters, (Zack), Joe Grooms(Carley), Luke Grooms(Abbi), Andy Grooms, and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings, Peggy Smith, Ronnie Goodwin, and Rose Peterson.  Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm Wednesday at Midway Baptist Church with the Rev. Mark Richardson officiating. Burial will follow in Eastside Cemetery.  The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at Carter Funeral Home in Rockingham and other times at the home.  The family requests memorials be made to Hospice of Richmond County, 1119 N. US Hwy 1, Rockingham, NC 28379.
