William Claudy Whitley, Jr., a quietly influential figure in our community and a beloved family man, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, February 23, 2025, at the age of 90. Born on March 27, 1934, in Montgomery County, North Carolina, William, dedicated his life to both his family and his work, leaving behind a legacy of love and dedication.
For 44 years, William was the proud owner and operator of Whitley’s Auto Sales. His unwavering commitment to his business was matched only by his dedication to his community, serving as a former board member of the Richmond County Bank and as a valued member of the Richmond County Chamber of Commerce. William’s devotion extended beyond his professional life; he was a lifelong member of the Church of God of Prophecy, contributing to both the Rockingham and Norman congregations with warmth and kindness.
William's family knew him to be a nurturing and loving patriarch. His proudest accomplishments revolved around his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, each a testament to the love and wisdom he imparted throughout his life. He shared joyful moments on the golf course with his son Wayne and his grandchildren, Brooke and Jamie, even participating in tournaments, cherishing every moment spent together. His love for his yard, where he spent many hours working and decorating, especially for Christmas, was just another reflection of his vibrant spirit and contagious enthusiasm for life.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 72 years, Clementine Webb Whitley; his daughter Cynthia Kay Whitley; his cherished grandchildren Jamie Whitley, Brooke Whitley Hildreth, and great-grandchildren Owen Whitley, Nicklaus Whitley, and Noah Hildreth. William was also fortunate to have the support of his daughter-in-law Jackie Whitley and bonus daughter Donna Johnson. He leaves behind his brothers J.C. Whitley, Hubert Whitley, and Sammy Whitley, along with his sisters, Edith Blake and Jean Hudson, all of whom will carry forward his legacy of generosity and compassion.
William was predeceased by his parents, William C. Whitley and Ruby King Whitley; his son, Dale Wayne Whitley; and his sister, Joyce Caulder. Their memory will forever remain intertwined with his, as they were integral parts of his journey.
To honor William's life and to celebrate the joy he brought to others, a visitation will take place on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, at the Church of God of Prophecy in Rockingham, NC, from 1:45 PM until 2:45 PM, followed by a funeral service at 3:00 PM. Pastor Steve Gilmer will officiate. Entombment will follow in the Richmond County Memorial Park Mausoleum
In moments of solitude, during quiet hours of reflection, may we each cherish the memories of a remarkable man who touched the lives of so many, leaving an indelible mark on their hearts. William Claudy Whitley, Jr. will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
